Northeast Qualifier Scout Notes: Day 1

John McAdams
Richmond County National started off day one with a 17 run offensive outburst in their victory over Wladyka American 2022 and Patrick Burns (2022, Freehold, NJ) had himself a day, showing off two-potential with upside on both sides. The uncommitted INF/RHP went 3-for-3 in the game with a grand slam and five runs-batted-in. The well-proportioned right-handed hitter hits from a fairly simple operation, showing the propensity to find the barrel with a quick, direct stroke. The New Jersey native then stepped on the mound to secure the win for his team. Using a deliberate paced delivery, the 2022 grad incorporates good lower half drive and extension out in front to produce downhill plane to his fastball. The fastball worked up to 86 mph in this look with plenty of missed barrels and striking out two hitters in his inning pitched. There is some physical projection remaining with a velocity uptick not out of the question.

Uncommitted Christian Rice (2022, Colts Neck, NJ) got the start for the other Richmond County entrant, showing intriguing arm speed and tons of projection. The long, lean right-hander only worked two innings, allowing only one hit and punching out three hitters in this short look. The fastball worked its way up to 86 mph before settling in the 82-84 range with heavy arm-side run. The 2022 Grad repeats his mechanics well with a short, compact arm stroke that is loose and clean through the backside. He shows advanced feel for his slider, manipulating its tight spin to generate plenty of empty swings. There is physical projection remaining and the relative looseness to his overall operation leads me to believe there is more velocity coming.
