Iowa Spring League Scout Notes: Week 1

Saturday Recap

Iowa Select Evans defeated Iowa Select Obermueller by a score of 5-1 on Saturday morning, collecting eight hits along the way. Prep standout Tommy Specht (2022, Dubuque, Iowa) led the way for Iowa Select Evans in this one, going 2-for-3 with an RBI double to get things started in the top of the first inning. Specht battled into a full count and shortened up the swing, getting on plane with a high fastball and sending it to the right-center field gap for a double. He has an innate feel for the barrel with present bat-to-ball skills, and his bat whips through the zone with impressive speed. Specht’s swing has been looking good as of late, and he has seen a rise in the national rankings as well; primarily because of his performance at the National Indoor Showcase in St. Louis in February, where he ran a 6.46 second 60-yard dash time and threw 96 mph from the outfield. The Kentucky commit is currently the No. 51 overall player in the nation, and we are excited to watch him for the duration of the Spring League.

Kooper Schulte (2022, New London, Iowa) also added a double in his first at-bat of the day, taking a low and inside fastball the other way for a screamer down the first base line. Schulte has impressed in our looks at him during the fall and so far, this spring. The primary shortstop is a twitchy player with smooth defensive actions and a natural instinct for the position. He makes it look easy out there, displaying soft hands and the ability to throw from multiple angles while making plays on the move.
