LATEST PG SHOWCASE REPORT
2006 National Showcase
Tanner Robles is a 2007 left hand pitcher from Cottonwood HS, residing in Murray, UT. Robles has a ridiculously plus body that is long, strong, and athletically proportioned, all on a 6'4" 190 lb. frame. He seems to keep gaining muscle in his lower half, in particular his powerful thighs. After hearing reports of his rise near the level where many projected him two years ago and having one of our PG scouts see him in a spring game to confirm it, Robles came out at PG National and wowed the scouting contingent. He showed plus stuff and moved himself near the top of the '07 class, ranking #3 among PG National Top 85 pitchers, a group that was the strongest top to bottom collection of arms ever assembled at showcase. He pitches from an over the top slot. His hand seems to come from somewhat near his ear and it is not all that easy to pick up. Robles has a methodical beginning to his delivery, then explodes once his lead foot hits the ground. There is an audible exhale of air as he is maximizing his bodies energy on each pitch. It is a pretty high effort and fast arm stroke, but he holds velocity as the game goes on. Once his arm gets to the top of its arc, it is super quick from there through release. His fastball sat in the low 90s and he touched up to 94 mph. Robles' fastball has good downhill angle, though pretty straight. His 1/7ish curveball has very tight spin and pretty late action curveball. After trying to catch up to the fastball, which does start bats, Robles is effective at getting hitters to swing at that deep curveball, thrown 73-74 mph. At times is it flashes as a potentially plus pitch. He showed a change-up. Robles showed an ability to pound the bottom of the zone with both his fastball and curveball. He has great stuff but is still learning to pitch. Right now he basically overpowers hitters. He is a good athlete, evident with a 4.43 home/1st time and a 7.21 60, not to mention a nice looking stroke at the plate. Robles will enter the spring of '07 as a potential 1st round pick.
