Yan Gomes is a 2006 catcher/infielder from Miami, FL with a solid athletic build at 6-1, 188 lbs. Gomes is a native of Brazil and lived and played there as a youth before moving to Miami. If there are more players like him in Brazil, we need to find them! Gomes is an excellent athlete with strength and speed. He has one of the best throwing arms among 2006 catchers in the country. He registered 82 mph in drills with a best pop time of 1.83. He has very quick feet behind the plate and can shift to get pitches well away from him instead of reaching. Not surprisingly, Gomes is a well above average runner for a catcher at 6.92 in the 60. Offensively, Gomes hits from a very open stance with busy hands. He doesn't ever fully close on the ball but shows very good hand quickness and bat speed. He can hit the inside pitch a long way if he gets hold of it. Overall, Gomes is one of the better raw tooled athletes you will see behind the plate and his skills are developing quickly. Highest level prospect who could really surprise people this spring and beyond.
