2019 Gulf Coast Prospect Showcase
John Benson is a 2021 OF/2B with a 6-1 170 lb. frame from Monroe, LA who attends Sterlington. Flashed a larger frame with a lean build and plenty of room to fill out down the road especially in the lower half. Ran a 7.25 second sixty yard dash. Primary Outfielder flashing a clean gather and transfer with a strong arm as well showing some carry on his online throws. Very toolsy here in the outfield with a projectable feel for it. Secondary Righthanded pitcher who showed repeatable mechanics with a belt high leg kick while balanced throughout. Did a good job of mixing up pitches keeping hitters off balance. Generated some extension finishing out front. Fastball sat in the upper-70's touching 80 with a slider in the low-70's with an advanced feel for it. Lefthanded hitter who started spread out while sinking into the legs a bit. Showed some bat wrap over the head with a longer swing path but squared it up when he got extended. Middle away type approach with a linear to ever so slightly uphill swing path. Good Student.
