2007 Hawaii Showcase Tournament
Matt Magill is a 2008 RHP/1B with a 6'2'', 170 lb. frame from Simi Valley CA, who attends Royal HS. Selected as a Top Prospect at this event. Magill has a lanky, lean build with long arms and plenty of room to fill out. He has a really loose, quick arm (and wrist) that works from a 3/4 slot and would seem to indicate that he has a pretty high ceiling as a pitching prospect. There is some effort in his delivery, but that should not stop him from continuing to gain velocity as he develops. Magill's fastball sat in the 83-85 mph range and has plus sink action. At times his fastball seemed to disappear down in the zone. He also showed the ability to ride it up and in to right-hand hitters. The ball really rotates well out of his hand. As good as his fastball is, Magill's slider is his best pitch. He throws it in the upper 70's and in time will get it into the low 80s. It has tight spin and late, darting action, with true slider shape. It is a swing and miss out-pitch. He also has a good change-up. Magill has good mound presence, holds runners really well, and has a good look in his eye when competing. At the plate he showed plus bat speed and the potential for some power to develop if he continues as a hitter. Watch for him to really emerge in the summer of '07 as one of the better pitching prospects in California.
