Spears is a quick, highly athletic player who has top level second baseman written all over him. Everything he does is short and quick both offensively and defensively. Spiers has a polished offensive game and could evolve into an excellent leadoff hitter. His above average speed and quickness enables him to steal bases aggressively. While Spiers plays mostly shortstop now and plays it well, his arm strength and quick release will serve him better on the other side of the base in pro ball. Spiers hands are sure and quick and with some practice we bet he could turn a lightning quick double play. Maybe what we like most about Spiers is that he’s a gamer, who knows baseball and plays hard and smart. He will be an impact college guy who should end up playing professional baseball. He ran a 6.69 in Lincoln. In Lincoln, he gave us the impression that he loves the game and can't get enough of it. Joe spent every minute possible on the field taking ground balls and shagging BP.
