2006 California Underclass
Josh Vitters is a 2007 3B/SS from Cypress HS, residing in Anaheim, CA, with a 6'3" 190 lb. frame. Vitters was named to the top prospect team at the California Underclass Showcase, was written up in the Top Prospect list, and was invited to the National Showcase. He has a strong, broad frame and a physical presence on the field. His strong lower half and that broad upper body are prototypical of a premium 3B prospect. A right handed hitter, Vitters hits from a square stance. He has plus-plus bat speed and is extremely aggressive to balls in the zone, particularly on the inner half. His trigger is exceptional and he can fire his hands as soon as his mind says "swing." That swing is absolutely alive and works sequentially. Vitters has easy and explosive power, not only in a BP session (where you can't help but dream of him hitting 35 HRs in pro ball someday) but also shows that juice in games. His power is the kind that simply comes from the way his body and swing work. He does not have to "try" to hit for power, it is naturally there, simply when he lets his hands fly. The ball leaves his bat with the trajectory of the true power hitters. He handles velocity easily and is clearly a premium hitting prospect. He has enough raw power to leave any part of the yard and someday when he learns to trust that, his ability to hit for high average will increase. On defense Vitters has excellent feel for the game. He has the tools that the top 3rd basemen have and not only that he shows the ability to makes plays, and make them on the move. His reactions fit well at 3B and so does his arm. All across the board, he is a prototype prospect at the hot corner. Vitters is a top tier player. He will be one of the most heavily recruited players by the power D1 programs and is already a prospect for the top couple rounds of the draft in June 2007.
