2004 National Underclass Dec 28-30
Mayer is a 5-10 left handed hitting junior outfielder from Tennessee who also plays third base. He has a medium frame with some strength in his hands and arms. Mayer ran the 60 in 7.55 and showed good arm strength and carry from the outfield at 81 mph with a smooth, easy arm action. Mayer listed himself as a primary third baseman but didn’t go through drills at that position. Playing third would help his overall versatility on the field and it certainly looks like he has the arm strength for the position. At the plate, Mayer hits from a quiet approach with a big, exaggerated leg lift trigger and a pull/loft swing plane. Mayer hits the ball hard in the air and shows some power potential. He’ll tend to get off balance occasionally with his leg lift and pull off the ball. Mayer is a good student.
