Ryan Jackson is a 2006 shortstop from Miami Springs, FL with a lean athletic build at 6-2, 170 lbs. He is one of the country's best defensive players, if not the best, of his age and he showed it in Atlanta. Jackson has excellent balance in the field and very smooth, soft hands. He has complete control of his body when fielding and throwing and can throw on the run with as much accuracy and velocity as when he's planted. There are no bad hops when Jackson is playing shortstop and he's especially good at charging the ball. If he has a defensive flaw, it's that he doesn't have the classic gun from the hole, but he has the knack of making the spectacular play along with making the difficult play look routine. Offensively, Jackson is a switch hitter who has really been working hard on his left handed swing. He still tends to hit around the ball but his bat speed and bat head skills have improved. Right handed, Jackson has very good power potential once he starts filling out and the ball is jumping off his bat now. His bat takes back seat to his defense right now but Jackson has consistently shown he can hit good pitching with wood and he's a bit overlooked in this regard. Top level prospect who will garner loads of professional attention next spring.
