2005 South Underclass Showcase
Spragins is a very tall and slender 6-5 junior right handed pitcher from Texas who hasn't come close to starting to physically mature yet. He throws from an overhand release point and has to pull his head and shoulders off of home plate to get his arm through. Spragins played plenty of first base at the showcase and showed a completely different arm action and release when throwing in the field. Spragins fastball during four innings of work topped out at 82 mph and was mostly 79-80 mph with good tailing life. Spragins most effective pitch was an 73 mph change up that was deceptive with good arm speed on release and good movement at the plate. He also threw a 66-69 mph curveball that was loose and hard to get down in the zone because of his release point and mechanics. Overall, Spragins has plenty of potential to throw harder when he starts to get stronger and makes some mechanical adjustments. He is an excellent student off the field. Named to the Top Prospect Game.
