2005 South Top Prospect Showcase
Burkhart is a 6-3, 195 lb left handed hitting senior catcher from Texas with a professional profile body and very good present strength. Burkhart has some mobility and speed for a kid his size and handled his defensive duties well behind the plate. He showed very good arm strength both in games and in drills and he relies on his arm rather than a quick release to gun down runners. Burkhart's pop times will go down from the 2.00 - 2.10 range easily with good instruction. At the plate, Burkhart has a power approach. He has a long, wrapped swing with plus bat speed. Burkhart will pull off pitches but he has lots of loft in his swing and can it the ball a long way. It's probably an approach more geared to aluminum right now but the raw tools are there for Burkhart to be a premium bat in the future. Burkhart also pitched an inning at the end of the showcase and might be a premium pitching prospect as well. He threw 85-88 mph on his fastball despite it being literally the end of the showcase and his arm worked very well for a primary position player. His 71 mph curveball had good spin and bit as well. It's very easy to see Burkhart as a 90+ arm with some adjustments and a little rest. Very good follow who could be a high ceiling prospect at two positions.
