Austin Shepherd is a 2017 RHP/3B with a 6-1 187 lb. frame from Lexington, KY who attends Paul Laurence Dunbar. Solid, well-proportioned athletic build. Up-tempo, well-paced to delivery, side step into leg lift above the belt. Clean hand break with elongated arm action, slight wrap backside, stays balanced in delivery with shorter stride, works through well with good armspeed to a high 3/4's arm slot. Fastball up to 85 mph, shows slight armside run, has ability to locate to either side of the plate. Has good feel for breaking ball, shows varied shape and tilt, but comes out of same plane as fastball, keeps hitters off balance, throws for strikes. Flashes rare changeup with cutting action. Also plays third base, moves well to either side and shows good body control, solid arm strength. Right handed hitter, opposite field approach, keeps front side closed and has swing geared to contact. Has strong potential on the mound. Great student.
