Matt Kaplan is a 2007 LHP/1B with a 6'4'', 215 lb. frame from Alpharetta GA, who attends Chattahoochee HS. He has a tall frame with very good present strength. Kaplan has a balanced delivery for most of his delivery and does a very good job of hiding the ball behind his big frame, creating some deception to the hitter. His arm is loose and he gets nice extension. Kaplan negates a lot of the good things he's doing at his release, when he falls off hard and unbalanced towards the third base side, effecting the quality of his pitches and his command. Kaplan's fastball was 80-82 mph with some running action. He threw both curveball and a slider; the curveball has better spin and more consistent location but he tended to get on the side of both of them due to his release. He also threw a couple of 65 mph change ups. Kaplan is strong and has a good arm and could improve with some adjustments to that particular part of his delivery. Kaplan also showed some raw power with the bat, using his strength whenhe got a pitch he could handle. He is also a good student.
