2017 South Top Prospect Showcase
Bennett Shoptaw is a 2018 RHP/SS with a 6-2 175 lb. frame from Little Rock, AR who attends Little Rock Christian Academy. Large frame with long limbs and wiry strength. Frame projects to support additional size with strength. Primary right handed pitcher with a smooth paced, side step delivery. Stays tall on back side and creates coil over back leg at gather. Works to the plate with drop and drive actions and finishes to glove hand side at release. Loose arm circle at separation and showed good arm speed while releasing from a high three-quarters slot. Fastball generated good downward plane through the zone with heavy run to arm side in the low to mid 80's, topped at 85 miles per hour. Curveball had 12/6 shape with tight spin and late, hard depth. Maintains arm speed and arm slot with breaking ball and proved to be very deceptive to hitters. Also flashed developing feel for a changeup that showed some sink in the upper 70's. Located fastball and curveball to each edge of the zone and consistently kept hitters off balance. Right handed hitter with an upright, slightly open stance and simple front side trigger. Works to contact with rotational lower half actions. Loose, extended path to contact with a slightly lifted plane through extension. Showed developing feel for the barrel and looked to created line drive contact between the gaps. Good student. Named to the 2017 South Top Prospect Showcase, Top Prospect List.
