2004 Sunshine East Showcase
Campbell Pilkey is a slender switch-hitting 2005 third baseman from Cooper City, FL, who also shows some prospect potential as a pitcher. Physically, one’s first impression is that he has a projectable pitcher’s body, but Pilkey has deceptive strength for a 6'2", 165 lb. athlete. Pilkey is a much better hitter from the left side of the plate. He generates very good bat speed with some loft in his swing and projects power in the future. Pilkey had one game at bat where he really whistled the bat through the zone and hit a line drive double over the right fielder’s head. His swing right handed is much stiffer and slower and he might consider going all lefty at some point in the future. Pilkey has good footwork at third base and plenty of arm strength. He’ll need to work on speeding up his release to become a better all around defender, but his tools play well at the position. Pilkey threw three innings late in the Showcase and it looked like he was a bit fatigued. He still pitched at 80-82 mph on his fastball and his loose, tension free arm made us think there’s plenty more velocity there, perhaps immediately. Pilkey threw a power downer curveball that was as high as 74 mph at times and had a sharp, big break. This could be a very good pitch for him as well. Campbell is a good student.
