J.J VanWinkle is a 2007 OF/P/1B with a 6'3'', 210 lb. frame from Gainesville FL, who attends Gainesville HS. He has a strong, large frame with above average present strength. VanWinkle is a very good athlete for his size. He ran the 60 in 7.22 and showed very good arm strength from the outfield at 88 mph. His release could be speeded up but his throws were on line and accurate. We've seen Van Winkle pitch in the past and his arm strength translate pretty well, as he throws in the mid-80's off the hill. He didn't pitch at this event. Offensively, VanWinkle has very good bat speed and plus raw power potential. He has a very busy approach right now, with a big hand hitch to start his swing and lots of body movement that changes his eye level during his swing. VanWinkle attacks the ball very aggressively and the ball jumps off his bat when he makes contact, but his contact is inconsistent right now. He's plenty strong enough to drive the ball without the effort he puts into it if he's able to make some adjustments. Overall, VanWinkle has a good upsdie if he's able to tone down his hitting approach. He could be a late bloomer.
