KC Fall Softball Scouting Combine Afternoon Session
Sophia DeFino is 5'4, class of a 2024, LHP/1B from Des Moines, IA who attends Lincoln High School (Des Moines). HS. Sophia is a gifted young player with a solid foundation, who shows projectable talent at more than one position and at the plate. She ran a 3.79 20-yard dash with a 1.20 5-yard split. A primary LHP, Sophia has a definite upside ability not usually found in players this early in their careers. She has a loose and deep arm circle. Her quick mechanical operation and in-line delivery are impressive. She can generate some big spin. Her fastball is well commanded to both sides of the plate and she is just scratching the surface of her eventual velocity. Before she is done, she is going to really be able to throw with big velo. Her change is very deceptive and plays well with her FB, She shows sound arm swing and great hand speed. Her CH has big down action late. Has to be very tough on RHH, especially. Her curveball has a lot of hard break to the glove side or into the RHH. Her screwball is a great compliment to her entire arsenal and she throws it hard. Big, hard break into LHH and away from RHH. She keeps the SC down in the zone. Big, swing and miss, out pitch. Her rise is a big jumper that elevates explosively and plays well off of her other pitches that she keeps at the bottom of the zone. Her upside promise in the circle is sound. Sophia also took a turn at 1B. She is measured and sure with her approach. Her feet work well and she positions consistently. Her glove plays and she transitions well. Her 51-mph throws are consistently accurate. At the plate, the LHH hitter leans more towards a power approach. She can handle the bat and has the right right idea concerning bunting. She will be a run producer moving forward. Sound swing operation. She has a solid and strong core and she knows how to incorporate that into her swing. Noticeable feel for the barrel. She has a flatter swing path with a slugger's lift at contact. She has an all-fields approach and some emerging power that should make a big jump as she moves through her career. Sophia has a lot of potential and with continued dedication to honing her skills while getting in the weight to add strength, she will be well on her way to a potential college career.
