5-run 7th leads to Sophomore title for BigStix Gamers

ATLANTA – A five-run seventh inning for BigStix Gamers helped propel them to a 7-4 win in the championship game over SWA Storm at the 2019 WWBA Southeast Sophomore Labor Day Classic at Brook Run Field outside of Atlanta on Monday. The biggest hit was a two-run single to center field by leadoff hitter Devin Portee that plated the go-ahead, and deciding, run.

The five runs that scored were all unearned as BigStix Gamers made the most of three singles, two errors and a walk. Portee and his double-play partner, second baseman Nolan Silver, each had a pair of base hits as Silver also scored a pair of runs in the title-clinching victory.

SWA Storm led for most of the game, scoring three runs in the bottom of the second and a single tally in the sixth. BigStix did put up a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to put themselves within striking distance, and despite giving up three unearned runs, starter John MacDonald did a nice job on the mound, striking out five in five innings of work, allowing just the three unearned runs on three hits and a walk while pounding the strike zone with mid-70s fastballs.

Jayden Talik worked the final two frames, striking out a pair while allowing one unearned run on two hits and a pair of walks.

Ashton Essex was named the event MVP by hitting .412 (7-for-17) with a pair of doubles, one walk, four runs scored and six driven in. All six of his RBI came during his team’s four playoff matchups.

For the SWA Storm, Caden Colson received Most Valuable Pitcher honors. Colson came up big in the Storm’s first matchup against the BigStix Gamers during pool play, delivering four key, scoreless innings in relief, allowing just one hit while striking out four while picking up the win in a 8-4 victory.
