17U BCS Championship Preview

Hannah Jo Groves
110 teams from all over the country will convene in Southwest Florida this weekend to compete for the 17U BCS National Championship beginning on Saturday.

Outfielder Michael Mullinax, the No. 5 ranked player nationally and a University of Georgia commit, joins a USA Prime Scout Team looking to make a deep run that includes fellow outfielder Terrence Kiel II (No. 83) and shortstop Arnold Abernathy (No. 164).

A pitcher who could challenge some of the country’s best hitting power is Schuyler Sandford, a Florida commit from St. Augustine, Florida. In a limited sample size through 2023, Sandford has  struck out five through three innings. With the ability to get his fastball up to 94 mph, while mixing in sliders and changeups Sandford can challenge even the strongest hitters.

Team Francisco Notorious 9 Select is one of the teams to beat this weekend  - posting an intimidating 24-4-1 mark on the year. With consistent scoring, notching over seven runs per game, Notorious’ solid hitting power is led by Ryan Kiendle and Matthew Cruz

Cruz, a two-way talent and No. 7 ranked right-handed pitcher in New York, has already struck out seven hitters through five innings this year. In the box, Cruz has five singles, a double and a homerun so far - driving in four RBIs with a batting average of .500 and an on base percentage of .588.

Ryan Kiendle, the No. 75 third baseman St. John’s commit from Ronkonkoma, New York, has three singles, three doubles, a triple and a homerun while knocking in 10 RBIs this season.

Pitching power from Zach Wyatt, Will Harrison and Logan Barber on TPL National 17U could prove problematic for big hitting teams.

Wyatt, a right-handed pitcher and Montevallo commit hailing from Pelham, Alabama, has an astonishing ERA of 0.00 in seven innings pitched - throwing nine strikeouts so far in the calendar year. Harrison, a right-handed pitcher out of Calera, Alabama, has contributed 10 strikeouts in the 10 innings he’s pitched. Finally, uncommitted right-handed pitcher Logan Barber has pitched a total of 10.1 innings and has registered an astonishing 13 strikeouts so far.
